Dettifoss is a colossal waterfall located in Northeast Iceland within Vatnajökull National Park, renowned for being one of the most powerful waterfalls in Europe. It spans about 100 meters (330 feet) in width and drops approximately 45 meters (148 feet) into the rugged Jökulsárgljúfur canyon, creating a thunderous spectacle that leaves visitors in awe.

The waterfall is fed by the glacial river Jökulsá á Fjöllum, which originates from the mighty Vatnajökull Glacier—the largest ice cap in Europe. This river carries sediment-rich glacial meltwater, giving Dettifoss its characteristic greyish-white color. Its immense volume and height combine to produce an average water flow of around 193 cubic meters per second, making Dettifoss not only a visual marvel but also a raw display of natural power.

Dettifoss sits amidst a dramatic landscape shaped by volcanic activity and glacial erosion. Surrounding the falls are striking basalt columns and jagged cliffs that enhance its dramatic setting. The nearby Selfoss and Hafragilsfoss waterfalls provide additional points of interest on the same river.

Dettifoss is an integral highlight of the Diamond Circle tourist route in North Iceland, alongside attractions such as Lake Mývatn, Húsavík, and Ásbyrgi Canyon. The best visiting time is during summer months (June to September) when access and trails are safer, although winter visits offer stunning frozen landscapes for the adventurous.
