Eldhraun is one of the largest lava fields in the world, sprawling across approximately 565 square kilometers (218 square miles) in southern Iceland.
It was formed during the catastrophic Laki volcanic eruption of 1783–1784, one of history’s largest lava flows, which dramatically reshaped the landscape and caused severe environmental and social impacts both locally and across Europe.
Today, the lava field is covered with a thick, vibrant green moss, giving it a soft, almost otherworldly appearance that starkly contrasts the harsh volcanic origins beneath.
Visitors traveling along the South Coast’s Ring Road will encounter Eldhraun as the sprawling mossy expanse visible on either side of the highway between the villages of Vík and Kirkjubæjarklaustur. While walking directly on the moss is forbidden to protect its fragile ecosystem, there are designated parking and viewing areas where visitors can safely admire the vast landscape and learn about its dramatic volcanic history.
The unique terrain even served as a training ground for Apollo astronauts in the 1960s due to its moon-like qualities.
