Harpa Concert Hall in Reykjavik with its geometric colored glass façade reflecting Iceland’s natural basalt landscape.

Harpa Concert Hall and Conference Centre is Reykjavík’s premier cultural landmark, located on the city’s harbor front. Officially opened in May 2011, Harpa is a striking symbol of Iceland’s resilience and creativity, rising as a modern architectural marvel celebrated for its unique glass façade inspired by Iceland’s basalt landscapes and the Northern Lights.

Designed by Danish firm Henning Larsen Architects in collaboration with Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson, Harpa blends art and engineering, reflecting and refracting daylight with thousands of geometrically shaped colored glass panels, creating a dynamic kaleidoscope of light throughout the day and illuminated vibrantly at night.

Harpa houses multiple concert halls and conference facilities. The largest auditorium, Eldborg, named after a famous Icelandic volcanic crater meaning "Fire Mountain," seats up to 1,800 people and is renowned for its outstanding acoustics. Smaller halls including Silfurberg and Norðurljós provide versatile spaces for concerts, conferences, and cultural events. The building also includes rehearsal rooms, offices, exhibition spaces, and a multifunctional hall for intimate performances and banquets.

The venue is home to the Iceland Symphony Orchestra and the Icelandic Opera and hosts a diverse calendar of performances, ranging from classical concerts to jazz, pop, and international cultural events. Harpa plays a vital role in Reykjavík’s vibrant cultural scene, making it a must-visit for art and music enthusiasts

Harpa’s architectural form is visually stunning and often compared to the natural volcanic rock formations found across Iceland — a modern "rock" rising from the sea.
