Steam rising from bubbling mud pools and fumaroles at Hverir geothermal area near Lake Mývatn, Iceland.

Hverir, located just east of Lake Mývatn and beneath the Námafjall mountain, is one of the most active and visually stunning geothermal sites in Iceland.

This surreal landscape features boiling mud pots, steaming fumaroles, and vibrantly-colored mineral earth, creating an atmosphere that feels otherworldly—often compared to scenes from science fiction. The area is a showcase of Iceland’s volcanic energy, with sights and smells unlike anywhere else on the island.

Visitors can explore marked walking paths that wind safely through the bubbling geothermal field. The ground here is streaked with reds, oranges, and yellows from sulfur and iron deposits, and the air is thick with volcanic steam and the distinctive “rotten egg” scent of sulfur.

A viewing platform near the parking lot offers panoramic vistas across the entire site, and there is detailed signage about the geothermal features and nearby hiking trail up Námafjall mountain.
