Kvernufoss is a beautiful waterfall located in South Iceland near the small town of Skógar. It stands approximately 30 meters (98 feet) tall and is tucked away within a narrow gorge called Kvernugil, which creates a secluded and peaceful atmosphere. Unlike its famous neighbor Skógafoss, Kvernufoss remains a hidden gem that many travelers overlook.

The name Kvernufoss translates to “Dweller in the Gorge,” an apt description as the waterfall cascades down from cliffs of volcanic lava rock into the sheltered canyon. The gorge’s walls are covered in lush green moss and dramatic basalt formations, offering a photogenic contrast with the powerful, roaring water. On sunny days, the mist generated by the falls often produces rainbows, adding to the magical setting.

One of the special features of Kvernufoss is the ability to walk behind the waterfall, giving visitors a unique perspective and an intimate experience with the cascading water. The trail leading to the falls is approximately 1.4 kilometers (about 0.9 miles) round trip from the Skógar Museum parking area and is considered an easy hike suitable for most fitness levels. The path follows the river upstream through gentle hills to the entrance of the canyon, where the roar of the waterfall becomes audible before it is visible.
