Studlagil Canyon, located in East Iceland’s Jökuldalur Valley, is an impressive natural wonder famous for its vast and striking basalt column formations.

The canyon remained hidden underwater until 2009 when the construction of the Karahnjúkar Hydroelectric Plant lowered the water level, revealing one of the most extensive collections of basalt columns in Iceland. Stretching about 500 meters (1,640 feet) in length, the canyon showcases towering columns up to 20–30 meters (66–98 feet) high, creating a dramatic and otherworldly landscape.

The turquoise glacial river running through the canyon, especially vibrant from March to July, adds to the breathtaking scene, making Studlagil a must-visit destination for nature lovers, photographers, and geologists.

The canyon is easily reachable by car from nearby towns such as Egilsstaðir or Seyðisfjörður, often visited as a day trip within the popular Eastfjords region. Besides the basalt columns, visitors can also explore nearby features like the basalt-surrounded Studlafoss waterfall.

Good to know

Scenic beauty

Studlagil Canyon offers a unique blend of sharp basalt cliffs and vivid blue-green waters, creating a surreal environment that changes with the seasons and weather. It is recognized for having Iceland’s most extensive on-land basalt column formations, making it particularly special among geological sites.

Accessibility

Visitors have two main access points. On the west side, there is a well-maintained viewing platform near a campsite, providing safe and easy access without the need to descend into the canyon. The east side (see map below) offers a more adventurous experience, where hikers can descend to the river using a short scramble aided by chains. The gravel road leading to the east side parking is somewhat bumpy but passable without a four-wheel drive, though cautious driving is recommended. Sturdy footwear is advised for navigating the rocky terrain.
