Sun Voyager (Sólfar) sculpture in Reykjavik, Iceland – a striking symbol of adventure and exploration featured prominently on

The Sun Voyager (Sólfar in Icelandic) is a striking steel sculpture located along Reykjavík’s scenic waterfront on Sæbraut road, just a few minutes’ walk from Harpa Concert Hall.

Created by Icelandic artist Jón Gunnar Árnason in 1986 and unveiled in 1990, the sculpture is often mistaken for a Viking ship, but it is actually a dreamboat and an ode to the sun. It symbolizes hope, freedom, progress, and the promise of undiscovered territories—inviting viewers to imagine journeys into the unknown.

Crafted from stainless steel, the Sun Voyager reflects the constantly changing Icelandic light, creating a shimmering effect that varies with the weather and time of day. The sculpture faces north, with the majestic Mount Esja and Faxaflói Bay in the background, making it a favorite spot for photographers and romantics alike. Visitors often catch spectacular sunrise and sunset moments here, as well as the midnight sun in summer and the northern lights in winter.

Scenic beauty

scenic beauty Sun Voyager (Sólfar): my rating

While the Sun Voyager is an appealing and photogenic landmark especially on clear days with Mount Esja in the distance, it is in my opinion somewhat overrated. The sculpture’s beauty is subtle and best appreciated during calm weather or sunrise/sunset. It is a nice stop to include when walking along the waterfront but not necessarily a must-see attraction in Reykjavík.
